Christmas-mad Brit reveals how he covers his home in 10,000 lights for just £4.50

A Christmas -mad lights enthusiast who has decked out his home with 10,000 LEDs says his bills are surprisingly cheap.

Andrew Walters, 32, has been spreading holiday cheer across Stillington, near Stockton for five years with his extravagant decorations, reports Teesside Live.

With help from businesses across Teesside, he has spent the last five weeks covering his house top to bottom with over 10,000 LED lights – but claims his energy bill only comes in at only £4.50 a night thanks to the energy-saving bulbs.

Over the last three Christmases he has raised hundreds of pounds for vital charities such as Cash for Kids after receiving a rapturous response from local people.

And now, after receiving the devastating news that his neighbour’s 17-year-old daughter had received a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Andrew has dedicated this year’s Christmas light display to her and is raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Since the grand switch-on last Saturday, Andrew has already smashed last year’s target, raising more than £600 for the charity to support specialist nurses.

Recalling an emotional moment on the night of this year’s switch-on, he told Teesside Live: “On the switch-on night, as soon as we mentioned the girl over the road, the donation buckets started filling up quicker, her dad was live streaming it to her and she was crying because she loves Christmas but at the moment she’s stuck in the hospital getting treatment.

“So hopefully she’ll be able to come out at some point before Christmas.”

He even hired a Father Christmas for the event, who arrived in a suitably bedazzled car.

In addition to raising money for some good causes, Andrew says he also wants to help rid festive season of its commercialisation and bring back the true magic of Christmas, commenting: “It’s all commercialised and there’s not enough magic for the kids these days, and there are so many Santas and stuff like that which is why I wanted a decent one, so he came all that way for the kids.

“It’s just about bringing back the magic for the kids – with the added bonus of raising money for charity too.
